Firstly a big thankyou to all the teams for turning up – 23 is not a bad number. Despite our fears about the weather it stayed fine most of the night and the worst of the rain held off until we were all safely home.

Honours of the night go to The Chaps with 1001 points out of a possible 1350. We can’t remember the last time we saw a four figure score! They were the clear leaders over Dragons with 962 points followed by SAS Hedgehogs and Moonlighters in joint third place with 916 points.

We thought you all did very well with more than half the teams getting more than half marks. Among the clues that nobody found were clues 4 and 70. A number of you would have been sitting next to clue 4 which was outside the Jack of Newbury and some teams did notice it at the start of the second leg - but we can’t give you credit for it. That no teams found the cryptic clue 70 was a slight disappointment to us, but this was more than outweighed by the fact that all of you found the cryptic clue 13 – well done: your minds are warped the same way as ours. Congratulations to The Chaps for being the only team to find and correctly locate clue 94; to Dragons for being the only team to find clue 64; likewise to Moonlighters for clue 42. Feedback on the clue sheets was generally positive and we hope you liked the fact that the only tree clue was not to be found in a forest.

Blake’s Six used the traditional scoring scheme of 10 points for a correctly located picture clue; 0 points for a location ‘half a point’ out and –10 for a location one point or more points out. On the cryptic clues, where an answer and location were required, we generally gave 5 points for each part and no 10 point penalties for ‘guesses’. Where the written clue was an anagram or straightforward question, 10 point penalties were applied where relevant. As usual, the organiser’s decision is final.

Again we would like to make a plea for more organisers to come forward. We would be delighted to give advice and practical demonstration to any newcomers, and now that digital images straight from the camera can be put into the clue sheet the excuse ‘I can’t draw’ starts to wear thin.

Bravery award of the night must go to Rakehell Raiders who started off as a pair but shortly after the start of the second leg dropped to being a one man band. A score of 180 for that leg at that time of night with one pair of eyes really impressed us.

Prior to this ramble a few people found they had part of a team so we thought on the next ramble we should provide a Matchmaker service in which the organisers could put teams together on a Blind Date. It might be an idea if you were to tell the organisers simply whether you were a team looking for extra members or members looking for a team to join.
